inb4 "why" Re-releases of Luurah Productions' Ginguiser fansubs, with plans to eventually complete the series unless Discotek licenses it first (which likely depends on whether the kickstarted original tapes' preservation project eventually results in a remaster). Releases will be slow and intermittent. Encoding and retiming takes hours per episode, and I have to touch-up the scripts too. Video source: DVD, 700x540, fixed and encoded to the best of my sorely lacking ability. --- A few years ago, I helped Luurah with TLC (and eventually full TL) of Ginguiser, mostly because of the /m/emes. Unfortunately, the project folded after 11 episodes due to everyone having more important things to do in life than fansubbing a notoriously low-budget show from the 70s. But I still had my translated scripts of the remaining episodes, and eventually bought the DVDs — as the publicly available WMVs the releases were based on are just godawful. Since then the show was also thrown up on Amazon Prime Japan and other services, but those are so-so encodes of the already bad source. And it is a really bad source. Not only are some episodes telecined and interlaced to the point of ruining half of the frames, literally each and every scene change, which happens once every 3-5 seconds, has the last frame torn on the bottom (or maybe misplaced somehow during filming). Which causes some sort of a flicker that at least to me looks tremendously annoying. How did the old raws deal with it? *By cropping away a good quarter of the screen.* For this episode I replaced the ruined frames with healthy ones where possible, but that's an excruciatingly slow manual process of writing hundreds of frame numbers in a script, so I probably won't do it again. Maybe it's possible to write a detection script, but I'm not a good enough scripter for that, and it would still require manual intervention. There are other issues with the source too — dirt, contrast problems, terrible audio, the usual issues of an old largely throwaway project from half a century ago. To think this was originally going to involve Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and other famous creators of the time... Non-exhaustive credits for this episode, plus Starseeker, whose [mSubs] release this was originally based on: https://luurah.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/ginguiser01-02/ I don't really know who else worked on this and other episodes as I was only in touch with Luurah back then, but it was actually quite a sizable team from what I now understand. Many thanks to all those who helped me with Vapoursynth wizardry that was needed to fix the issues with telecining/interlacing/blended frames, and to those who gave me the WIP files for the unreleased episodes.
