What you're seeing here is Kakkun Cafe, a 1984 Movie, made as an attempt to capitalize on the sensational [Lockheed Scandal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_bribery_scandals), still fresh in people's minds, and with Japan's ex-Prime Minister ([Kakuei Tanaka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakuei_Tanaka), the titular "Kakkun") indited and imprisoned. Just like with [Mister Giants](https://nyaa.si/view/1988624) before, Marty had once again bought and captured (via Kineko) the VHS tape for it for some reason, but ended up sending the raw to me the because he can't be arsed to fansub it himself. Safe to assume that here he also found the LP for it first, and simply liked it that much (to be fair, a lot of the songs here are real bops). Marty didn't want to be associated with this release, though, so he asked me to do it under my own label.
Also much like with Mister Giants, this movie is largely biographic and centered on one person you've never heard about, although Kakkun Kafe's take on it is dramatically different, with the goal to mock and even libel Tanaka himself, and a lot of his contemporaries, mostly also from Japan's politics; I found this movie rather similar to "[Go Go! Toraemon](https://nyaa.si/view/1938953)" that I've previously translated for Orphan. The majority of the production staff here also worked on [Ganbare! Tabuchi-kun](https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3538), so it probably has a similar feel to it too (I haven't seen it), and others draw comparison to Ishii Hisaichi works, particularly his yonkomas.
Unfortunately, it's likely that we'll never be able to see this movie as was originally intended by the production crew: it ended up being a massive box office flop, and as such, for the VHS release, it was considerably reedited and shortened (for example, [Masako Oya](https://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/the-japanese-pink-billionaire-masako-ohya-october-7-1990-news-photo/947472714) was supposed to make a guest appearance, voicing herself here, but the character that looks like her doesn't even have any lines in this version). Overall, they've done an extremely lazy scan for the VHS release too. The movie was clearly done in 16:9 for theater screening, but got mercilessly cropped to 3:4 on VHS, and so a lot of the signs/characters appear cut off on the side.
Needless to say, there's no hope to ever see it re-released/remastered on modern media or even streaming. What they were cooking with it is anyone's guess, because even in 1984, I struggle to imagine who'd be interested in seeing it in theaters. I guess there simply wasn't any demand for that kind of political satire. That said, I can't help but respect this movie's dedication to lampooning a single politic who fucked up.
Now in 2025, it's even harder for me to imagine who'd want to watch this. Again, it's Kakuei Tanaka and a bunch of other senior LDP members getting fingered for 60 minutes straight. Most of the jokes would fly way over anyone's head in our days to be fully understood, even more so in the Occident where even the Lockheed scandal itself wasn't such a major headline. **As such, I've furnished this sub wit extensive TL Notes, explaining the in-jokes, references, and who is being caricatured at that or this point. Alternatively, there's a "noteless" subtitle track for those of you who can't read.**
The show itself is divided into ~10 minute long skits, defined by different themes (Kakkun's childhood, Kakkun at a golf course, Kakkun riding a Shinkansen to Niigata, Kakkun in America, Kakkun saving the world), interrupted by satirical commercial breaks and occasional songs (of which there are more than a few, and a lot of them exclusive to the LP, so without Marty providing lyrics scans for those, I'd be cooked), therefore, against my habit, I added chapters to this file for ease of navigation.
That final part, "Kakkun saves the world," is, in fact, one big parody of the 1982 Movie "198X-nen Future War" which caused a lot of buzz right before Kakkun Cafe was made. We actually resubbed that movie as well, if it wasn't for Marty stalling it into oblivion.
The subtitle script is 16,000 lines long, and only 700 of these are actual dialogue, so both the translation, which involved looking up countless people, events, and references from the 70s politics, but typesetting as well made me wanna off myself. Hell, I spent well over three hours writing this very torrent post. I want my time back.
